we are very proud to bring you a mix from another legend of the club scene and true school innovator yogi haughton. my first memory of yogi was at early streetrave events and the vaults in edinburgh, i also went with a bus load to hear him play at the legendary soundyard in bradford along with unique 3. if my memory serves me correct dionne played live that night. a self confessed vinyl junkie, yogi has over 80,000 records and still going strong, we are pleased he is sharing some of them with us here on a deeper groove. this mix is ripped from cassette so the sound quality isn’t amazing but i feel it adds to the authenticity.

Yogi’s roots are firmly implanted in the Northern Soul and Jazz/Funk scenes after frequenting legendary venues including Wigan Casino, Rafters, Legends, Berlin and Blackpool Mecca. His schooling and passion for dance music began early and has never relented; he is without doubt one of Scotland’s most influential DJ’s and the Godfather of modern clubbing in Scotland.

Yogi has been credited as being the man who gave house and techno music to Scotland via his legendary Edinburgh based Hoochie Coochie club in the mid 80s and as the first resident at Glasgows infamous Sub Club. By DJing at 14 of the legendary Southport Weekenders and several Prestatyn Weekenders his extensive knowledge, experience and ability to play any sphere of black music at the highest level has gained him many loyal fans. At the weekenders Yogi & Norman Jay’s all-night Pot Pourri sets became one of the most essential sessions. “It was amazing, thousands of people into every sphere of black music and hungry for rare shit came to see us.” said Yogi.

Clubbers at some of Scotland’s top clubs have seen Yogi appear alongside Trevor Nelson, Li’l Louie Vega, Jeremy Newall, Gilles Peterson, Graeme Park, Tony Humphries, Juan Atkins, Nightmares On Wax, Kerri Chandler, Danny Rampling, Todd Terry, the list goes on and on. Yogi has always played all over the U.K and at numerous events abroad putting him on the same bill with just about every major DJ or live act in the business. The list includes Kenny Dope Gonzales, Chaka Khan, Sam Dees, Leroy Hutson, Terry Callier, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, Sounds of Blackness, Gwen Owens, David Sea, Ten City, Tony Humphries, Roy Ayers, Mr Fingers, Roger Sanchez, Rose Royce, Glenn Jones, A Guy Called Gerald, Tyree, Fast Eddie, Queen Latifah, Keni Burke, etc etc!

His technical excellence has been recognised on a global level on many occasions for both radio and club work. His recent trips have seen him play in Australia, France, Sweden, Ireland, New York and in New Jersey at the real deal garage club Phuture Soul. Yogi has recently played sets alongside Soulsonic and Shrunken Head’s main man Stuart Patterson, these gigs have won him critical acclaim with fans both in London and the U.S.

His experience is combined with an unquenchable thirst for the latest and best unissued sounds. complimented by strong beliefs and bombastic delivery has won him many admirers and a number of critics, while there is a division on whether he is right or not, Yogi undoubtedly provokes comment but always sticks to his guns. Kissing ass is not one of his traits!

Yogi’s knowledge and experience has allowed him to become a prominent journalist with 16 years writing experience at the forefront of the Scottish industry. Many major publications regularly call upon his writing skills such as DJ Magazine, The Big Issue, The Scotsman, Scotland On Sunday and The Edinburgh Evening News. This work has extended to Radio & TV with appearances on Radio Scotland, STV, Forth One, BBC Choice, ITV, Radio 2, Capital Radio, Southport Radio, and numerous stations abroad.

Production work has seen releases on R&S, Vibe, Guidance, Rumour, Hubba Hubba, Rogue Music, Think Pink, Marimba and in 2008 the newly formed Shrine Sounds stable. you can currently hear yogi spinning northern soul at Slippin! Around @ Bier Halle West, 372-374 Great Western Road, glasgow. and at jumpin a go go @ Bond No.9, 84 Commercial Street, Edinburgh. his next night is soulolgy @ ambar 142 St Vincent Street, Glasgow.

bringing you a selection of quality hip hop, with a few curve balls we have another exceptional guest mix. for those of you who visit this site regularly you will know who spinnerty is,but for those who don’t know this is our third mix from the san francisco based dj/producer. dan finnerty started spinning records late 1997. and by his own admission started off about as amateur as you can get, “trying to scratch Liza Minnelli records on my parents old turntable and a radio shack mixer borrowed from a friend”. A few different things all came together to inspire him to get things moving. always being a jazz head (he played in jazz bands in middle school), the improvisational nature of turntablism sparked his interest. Around the same time, diving into groups like The Beastie Boys, KRS-ONE, Mixmaster Mike, and Gangstarr. his first residency was Wednesday nights at the Canopy Club in illinois. By the time he graduated, he was consistently performing 5 nights per week, hosting the radio show on WEFT, releasing mixtapes, seeing his name pop up in the local and national media, producing tracks, doing shows around the midwest, helping book and promote touring artists, and organizing events on campus with UC Hiphop. Two short weeks after graduating, he left it all behind and took a leap of faith in moving to San Francisco, where he still resides and is heavily involved in the city’s world famous bay area hip-hop scene. he has played with people like KRS-ONE, Diplo, Beni B, J Boogie, RJD2, Blueprint, Wildchild, Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, Lego, Psalm One, All Natural, The Opus, Heiruspecs, DJ Neil Armstrong, DJ Bles One, Galapagos 4, Mark Almaria, and Crown City Rockers to name a few. In 2003, Spinnerty was recognized for his studio skills by URB Magazine when his mix CD, “Play It On the Porch”, was selected in URB’s Top Ten of 2003. After producing tracks with several emcees and vocalists on a local level, 2006 saw the Spinnerty-produced track “City Life” appear on the excellent OM Hip Hop imprint, home to people under the stairs. spinnerty’s latest release the what? - definition part two was released on 11th of feburary, you can pick this up at : http://www.myspace.com/spinnerty or http://www.spinnerty.com

Is it ever perfect?
I’ve spent almost half my life attempting to make my perfect mixtape, coming close with one or two that I’ve been really pleased with, but always something lets it down.
Is it ever perfect?

I’ve spent almost half my life attempting to make my perfect mixtape, coming close with one or two that I’ve been really pleased with, but always something lets it down. Whether it’s a missed drop in here, a bit of dead air there, or – worst of all – a beats-all-over-the-place mix going everywhere, there’s forever a flaw that means the mix never gets heard beyond my ears.

So, to plumb the depths of barrel scraping, here’s one that combines all three of the above no-no’s.

As age goes by, I realise that I’m not going to turn into the J Rocc/Keb Darge/DJ Spinna/Q-Bert combination that I hear in my head sometimes when I’m hanging over the decks, which means that it’s becoming more about the music than mistake-free mixes. This wee three-quarter hour jaunt is what normally happens when the record light is flashing: a tendency to rifle through the racks leads to a bit of everything getting selected including a funkified Jimi Hendrix , a smoothed out OC, and a UK-souled-up Erykah Badu.

It’s all rounded off with two of my favourite purchases of this year. The Soul Investigators are best known for being the band on Nicole Willis’ superb album ‘Keep Reachin’ Up’, but here they throw down a much more northern soul type sound to back up some smooth vocals from Myron & E. And, ask anyone to name a Nancy Sinatra song and you’ll get answered ‘These Boots Were Made For Walking’. Well, Nancy girl was obviously mighty miffed with men for this period in her life (divorce to her first husband was either in the post or freshly raw), because this superb slice of 60’s pop is in the same spirit as ‘These Boot’s….’. Two albums separate the two tracks, but this is the only thing that splits them. Same theme, same vibe, same musicality.

Perfectly flawed.

The Widowmakers Meet Jamaica

Craig G Welcome To The Game

Peanut Butter Wolf with Planet Asia & Madlib Definition Of Ill

OC Times Up (DJ Eclipse remix)

The Pharcyde Pandemonium

Channel Live Mad Izm (Original Buckwild Remix)

Slum Village Get Dis Money (instrumental)
